I'll never forget the first time my dad came to visit me in my last house. I was living in a conversion — an old mansion that once belonged to a grand family that had been divided up into condos. I had my own condo and it was totally separate from the rest. It had high ceilings, gorgeous original mouldings, amazing character — but he didn't get it. He didn't understand how I could spend all that money to basically live in the same house as five other families. But I got it. It had total charm, it had character and I was converted.
