Best Shopping In New York
As editor of the House & Home magazine’s Style Files section, I’m constantly on the hunt for great-looking stores to feature. It’s a habit that’s hard to turn off, especially in New York, where retail is something akin to religion. In July, I wrote about the inspiring summer style found at Calypso, and now I’d like to invite you into another gem: Ochre.

Located at 462 Broome Street in Soho, it’s a long-time favourite of just about every H&H editor. A mix of vintage and new, its relaxed elegance and quiet European flavour is a constant source of inspiration — and lust. I admit, I want it all. But, let’s focus on the inspiration part, which is why I snapped these shots when I was there last weekend.

If I had an open-plan living/dining area, I would divide the space with shelves like these, just as they’ve done here. (The shelves are behind the pink sofa, below). I love their lived-in, pantry feel and the juxtaposition of that look with the glamourous cascading chandelier.

I tend to be drawn to graphic colour combinations like crisp blue and white, but lately I’ve been giving pastels a second look. This mix is soft and soothing, and the use of rough-hewn textures tempers its sweetness. If, like me, you’re falling in love with the furniture and lighting, South Hill Home in Toronto carries pieces from Ochre.

I prefer hardy table linens to the pressed white variety — too high maintenance!

Here’s how Ochre would set the rest of the table.
This is the back of the store. There’s a tendency to paint out wood framing and trim to create a more up-to-date look. Here’s a great example of the natural finish adding to the allure of a space.
Gorgeous platters and plates, and the perfect lamp. Imagining my table set with these makes me want to call friends over for a rustic bread salad and good wine. Want to come?
